Join The Mother PAC for a Moms’ Night Out

If you’d like to help get more family-friendly legislation passed in Salem – or if you’d just like to find out more about how legislation in Oregon affects families – AND you’d like to enjoy an evening out with an interesting and inspiring group of local moms (just like you!), you’re in luck! The Mother PAC, a political action committee formed by moms to promote family-friendly legislation in Oregon, is hosting their second Moms’ Night Out next week. The first event drew over 35 local moms – some politically active, others just curious – to share food and drinks along with lively conversation about their visions for Oregon’s future. Representative Tina Kotek (D-North/NE Portland) was on hand to give an update on the current session, answers questions and get feedback from the crowd. The next event will be held at Magnolia’s Corner in the Hollywood District on Tuesday, April 26, from 7 to 9 pm. Senator Jackie Dingfelder (D-NE/SE Portland) will be there to share her experiences and insights, answer questions and hear your concerns. So far the Mother PAC has scheduled three Moms’ Nights Out this spring (the April event is the second). “Considering the overwhelmingly positive response (to the first event),” says co-organizer Carrie Wynkoop, “we hope to continue doing them throughout the next year.” She says they’re looking forward to expanding the events outside of Portland proper to include Lake Oswego, Beaverton and Hillsboro, too. “Serena Cruz Walsh and I decided to start the Mom’s Night Out program because we wanted to connect with other moms who share our values in a fun, social setting,” says Wynkoop. “We wanted to give moms a chance meet up with other moms who are interested in making a difference in Oregon but who might not know exactly how to get involved. These Mom’s Night Out events are a chance to learn a little and socialize a little at the same time! It’s also a great opportunity to get to meet some amazing, family-friendly legislators and let them know about the issues that we care most about.” The goal of the Mother PAC is to get more moms involved in politics and to raise money to support family-friendly political candidates throughout the state. The PAC works to raise awareness about the public policy issues that matter to families and to help elect candidates who will champion the kinds of policies that help families thrive. During their first year, they raised over $25,000 and endorsed over 40 candidates. They’re currently gearing up for the 2012 elections. Get more information about Mother PAC at motherpac.org .

Sellwood Riverfront Park

What’s to Love: Located just to the west (and below) Sellwood Park, Sellwood Riverfront Park often gets passed-up as bikers cruise the Springwater Corridor and cars zip by on the way to Oaks Amusement Park , Oaks Rollerskating Rink, or hiking in the nearby Wildlife Refuge. Too bad! Just like many inner southeast parks, this
